I ASKED MY FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES:

WHAT WOULD THE WORLD LOOK LIKE WITHOUT ME?

“Just imagine for a moment how many students' lives you've changed and impacted during your career.... That's a lot of ripples.”

“Academically thought-provoking, creative, communicative, committed teacher who cares and makes a difference in young lives.”

“Your brilliant passionate teaching, your generosity and neighborly care...without you, my world would be a poorer place.”

“Your passion! The world, and I in particular, would miss your passion! I love how you jump full-force into everything you do! And when you aren't feeling that passion about something, you know it's time to make a change because just going through the motions isn't in your repertoire.”

“You helped me grow up so much and never ever judged me . . . You molded me, as I think I did you a bit. Those are the people worth knowing, mourning, and celebrating when they are gone. I always felt life needed to be lived and I tried to show you what you could handle of that in me. You taught me serenity and being true to yourself and the ones you love, you triumphed after all.”

“You never taught a class of mine, but I always thought you were the man. You took time to talk to me and connect a little bit when you could. I remember having conversations about A Clockwork Orange and Donnie Darko with you in passing, and that made me wish that I could've had a class with you.”

"Your spontaneity and vulnerability."

"Your passion to inspire."

“This might be a strange connection, but for some reason my mind went straight to science: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. How does that apply to what the world would be missing without you? Well, there have been multiple times in my life when your influence has changed me. I genuinely believe that a world without Dominic Inouye is a world lacking inspiration.  Let's be real. There are a lot of ordinary people in this world, but we need more people like you. Just by simply being you, you are changing people's lives in ways you probably would have never imagined. The world would not be the same without you. You inspire others. You inspire me.”

“The world would be missing an incredibly patient man that always made his students feel heard and well taken care of. You were never afraid to be yourself and try new, difficult things. You were one of the reasons I made it through high school alive and can openly be myself now.”

Without “you I would've felt less welcome and less inspired to be my best self.  Sorry it's more than a dozen words, but it's hard because I could probably whip out a 500-word essay on how you have influenced me for the better and still feel that would be insufficient."
